Kyra Sellers has spent the last six months in the psychiatric ward of the Maryland Mental Health Unit, completely cut off from her normal high school life. Now, she is finally being discharged and is determined to reclaim her identity as Goth Girl. Dressed in her signature black and feeling stronger than she has in a long time, Kyra expects to pick up exactly where she left off. Her first priority is to reconnect with Fanboy, the one person who truly understood her before her hospitalization. But when she tracks him down, she discovers that time has moved on without her. Fanboy has completely transformed, leaving behind his old geeky persona and integrating into a social circle she barely recognizes. Feeling betrayed and abandoned by the only friend she trusted, a familiar anger begins to bubble up inside her. As old memories and fierce emotions rush back to the surface, Kyra must navigate the difficult reality of changed friendships. She quickly realizes that re-entering the real world might be the hardest battle she has faced yet.
