An English captain, Mr. Hemings, acknowledged fathering Elizabeth Hemings, born to a full blooded African woman. Elizabeth was owned by John Wayles and later became his concubine. They had six children, who all used the name Hemings. At the death of John Wayles, Elizabeth and her children became the property of Thomas Jefferson (1743-1826). Sally (1773-1835), one of Elizabeth's daughters, became Thomas Jefferson's concubine and had five children by him, who lived at Monticello in Albemarle Co., Virginia, and later moved to Ohio, Maryland and Washington.
