John Steptoe (1950-1989) was a celebrated American author and illustrator renowned for his contributions to children's literature. He was a pioneer in creating vibrant, often African-inspired picture books that authentically depicted African American culture and experiences. Steptoe is perhaps best known for his Caldecott Honor book, "Mufaro's Beautiful Daughters," a retelling of a traditional African folktale.
