Children's Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA) Policy

Last Updated June 26, 2024

KRKB is committed to protecting the privacy of children. We adhere strictly to COPPA guidelines to ensure a safe environment for all young readers.

The Children's Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA) is a US law designed to protect the privacy of children under the age of 13. At KRKB and our parent company, Learnastra LLC, we take these obligations very seriously.

Collection of Personal Information

KRKB does not knowingly collect Personal Identifiable Information (PII) such as full names, home addresses, or phone numbers from children under the age of 13. If a child under 13 wishes to use features of KRKB that require an account (like posting reviews or stories), they must do so with the supervision and consent of a parent or guardian.

We may collect a parent's email address solely for the purpose of providing notice and obtaining consent.

Use and Disclosure

We do not disclose personal information collected from children to third parties. Information collected is used solely for the internal operation of the website (e.g., maintaining the user account, moderating content).

As part of the Learnastra LLC technology family, KRKB may utilize shared organizational infrastructure, but we maintain strict data silos to prevent unauthorized internal or external access to children's data.

Verifiable Parental Consent via KBA

Before an account for a child becomes active, we require verifiable parental consent. At KRKB, this is rigorously handled via Knowledge-Based Authentication (KBA). Parents must successfully answer dynamically generated, adult-oriented verification questions to activate a child's account. By passing this verification, parents agree to their child's use of KRKB services, including writing reviews, taking quizzes, and participating in clubs.

Parental Rights & The Parent Portal

As a parent or guardian, you are equipped with a dedicated Parent Portal dashboard connected to your verified email. You have the right to, and capability to directly:

  • Automated Monitoring: Receive our Weekly Parent Digest email summarizing everything your child published in the last 7 days.
  • Activity Auditing: Log into the Parent Portal to review a complete, paginated feed of all comments, reviews, and stories submitted by your child.
  • Data Control: Request the deletion of your child's personal information or revoke consent right from the portal.

For advanced data requests, you can also contact us at contact@krkb.org. We utilize AI-moderation to actively scrub PII from all child submissions before publication to ensure accidental disclosures do not occur.

Data Security

We have implemented appropriate physical, electronic, and managerial procedures to safeguard and secure the information we collect online to prevent unauthorized access, maintain data accuracy, and ensure the correct use of information.

Changes to this COPPA Policy

We may update this policy from time to time. We will notify parents of any material changes in the way we treat personal information by placing a prominent notice on our website or by sending an email to the parent's email address on file.
