When Zack, a tiny ostrich chick, hatches all alone in the vast wilderness, a kind-hearted zebra named Zella takes him under her protection. She watches over the awkward bird, keeping him safe from predators until he grows into a massive, fast-running ostrich capable of defending himself. Years later, it is Zella who needs a helping hand when she gives birth to Zodiac, a very clumsy and defenseless zebra foal.
